Can You Imagine That: Individual Differences in Visual Mental Imagery

چکیده
Differences in mental imagery ability between individuals have been reported since Galton 1880. Despite much progress the field, particularly with advent of neuroimaging techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging, neural bases and why individual differences exist are not fully understood. Several subjective objective methods proposed utilized to investigate strength visual imagery, even predict content imagery. Recent evidence has shown that people opposite extremes ability, aphantasia hyperphantasia, selective impairments enhancements visualize elements We argue this heterogeneity is generalizable population who relatively normal ability. Current studies overgeneralized specific paradigms stimuli apply all types stimuli, under presumption homogenous. Future would benefit from both increased granularity expanded scope used.

Imagine that: elevated sensory strength of mental imagery in individuals with Parkinson's disease and visual hallucinations.
Visual hallucinations occur when our conscious experience does not accurately reflect external reality. However, these dissociations also regularly occur when we imagine the world around us in the absence of visual stimulation. We used two novel behavioural paradigms to objectively measure visual hallucinations and voluntary mental imagery in 19 individuals with Parkinson's disease (ten with vi...
متن کاملIndividual differences in spatial mental imagery.
In this article, we report a new image-scanning paradigm that allowed us to measure objectively individual differences in spatial mental imagery--specifically, imagery for location. Participants were asked to determine whether an arrow was pointing at a dot using a visual mental image of an array of dots. The degree of precision required to discriminate "yes" from "no" trials was varied. In Exp...

An individual’s life or his/her entire medical history, from conception to death, may be documented as ultrasound images, radiographies, tomographies, photos, movies of surgical procedures, and measurable data converted into graphics illustrating descriptive and comparative statistics. Could anyone have predicted this 20 years ago? This is possible and not only limited to ophthalmology. Most, i...
متن کاملImagine That: The Relationship between Imagery Measures and Imagery Types
Imagery is an important feature of mental simulation, which is central to human cognitive functions from decision making to joint action to language production. Imagery is often used as a mental rehearsal strategy in areas of expertise, such as music, athletics and surgery, but also in movement rehabilitation. Individual imagery abilities may vary by general, modalityunspecific imagery capacity...
متن کاملCan You Be Persuaded? Individual Differences in Susceptibility to Persuasion
Persuasive technologies are growing in popularity and many designers create systems which intentionally change users attitudes or behaviors. This study shows that peoples individual differences in susceptibility to persuasion, as implemented using the six persuasion principles proposed by Cialdini [2], relates to their compliance to a persuasive request which is accompanied by a persuasive cue....
